MicroLab

Five-Day Course in Microsurgical Techniques

The Course
The purpose of the microsurgery teaching laboratory is to provide the basic foundations of the principles and skills that make up good microsurgical technique. Our goal is not simply to teach the mechanics of placing a micro-suture, but to teach an organized, step-by-step approach to success in microsurgery.

The course is currently taught by Dr. Gustavo Perez-Abadia and is based on the curriculum Dr. Robert Acland developed in 1975 to provide formal instruction in the skills needed for microsurgical microanastomoses and neurorrhaphies. The course involves 40 hours of instruction starting Monday morning and finishing Friday afternoon. The course uses video demonstrations followed by practical, hands-on exercises with the instructor. The course focuses on basic microsurgical skills, including arterial and venous anastomoses, end-to-end interpositional grafting, and end-to-side anastomoses. The course was designed to teach students with no microsurgical experience. However, the curriculum is equally valuable for individuals who have had some microsurgical training but who want to make a new beginning in order to strengthen and upgrade their skills.
